I have a 55 plate S60 D5. I have had the wheels refurbished by the dealer twice now, due to the lacquer peeling off. I am happy that the dealers standard of work is up to scratch..I'm just concerned that I may have a dodgy set of wheels? Has anybody experienced this problem before? I am in negotiations with the dealer as to what to next...

I don't use any harsh abrasive cleaners...it seems that the lacquer just wont stop peeling off. I only had them refurbished 4 months ago!

I had the golfs completely replaced, I have a XR3i which had really manky wheels but to get them to a good standard I had them blasted and powder coated. Do you know if they removed the tyre and painted the alloy or did they do a smart repair ? If you want a perfect finish then I would try someone like spit n polish and get them done properly... you don't have a machined face alloy do you ?

Hi, Do yo use wheel cleaning sprays/chemicals?? Don't. Do you use a pressure spray/washer? Don't - not only does the spray perforate the tyre it increases the wear on the wheels and their finish. If the wheel is corroding from the inside - causing the paint and lacquer to peel then the wheels need to be brought back to the metal, acid etched and maybe zinc treated to prevent further corrosion. Then apply the paint and bake, and then clear coat/lacquer and bake again.. Des. . . ;)

Was it a full refurb or just a sand and paint job? Just wondering if maybe that's the reason as a sand and paint job won't last? Mine were refurb'd last year and I think they seem to be picking up more little chips now so I guess the surface isn't as hard as when they're new. I've not used any harsh cleaners on them though - just Poorboys Wheel Sealant for protection and then the same shampoo I use for the rest of the car. So far there's no sign of the lacquer lifting away around the chips - fingers crossed! Tony
