Hi, I have 4 string tracks (MIDI) that I'm trying to edit, all together. Because my strings use the same shade color (using SWS auto color), I can't visually differentiate one track from another, in the MIDI editing window. All the MIDI notes are all the same color. So, I can't tell, visually, whether a note is a cello, violin double-bass or viola since they all look alike...and it's confusing. (I'd like to "color notes by track" -but all the tracks are the same color...so, that doesn't help at all) Suggestions? Peace, Keith

I may have some ideas but trying to understand. Do you have one media item per track, with each track representing an instrument? So 4 different tracks total?

I thought SWS auto color is just for track colors? If you use one midi editor per project and the color to track I would think they MIDI notes from each track would be a different color.

hmmm think that makes sense. I'm not too familiar with that SWS feature but now I can see how it's causing an issue for you. I'm not sure the solution but somebody will!

Select Colour "by Source" in the MIDI Editor

Thank you, DarkStar...and Nait! I really appreciate the additional suggestion. It's a great idea that I'd never tried, so that's always exciting! However, though "SOURCE" changes the colors, there's no way to know what color equates with what instrument. Which will leave me uttering the phrase: "Pink is doublebass, blue is cello, yellow is viola and grey is violin" over and over, while I'm editing, so I don't forget. Perhaps I should use the action "Randomize colors of selected tracks" before the edit, and hit "SWS Autocolor>Force" when I'm done. That's dead simple and maybe just a quick. While working on several MIDI tracks at a time (which I do for strings, woodwinds and brass -each group colored the same) in the MIDI editor, I'd LOVE to be able to quickly solo the specific MIDI track I'm tweaking -just for a moment- so I can hear the instrument all by itself. And, I'd like the ability to do that, while the MIDI editor is open full-size (rather than shrinking the MIDI editor window so that the mixer/track "solo" button is available) Anyway...I'm thinking "Actions" are the way to go. But: there's no action for "Force SWS Autocolor", so that'll require a mouse click. What do you think?

Assuming you have named your tracks suitably, you can display the Track List or Media Item lanes in the MIDI Editor. Then you would see which track you are currently editing and can select another track by clicking the "curved-down arrow" icon for the desired track. Here I am editing "Viola" and can only edit /add / remove the blue notes. So I do not need to remember the colours. You could also edit the piano roll note names for each track and add the track name to say each C note. The names only appear when you select a MIDI item on that track. I have just done two of the four here:

Thank you, DarkStar..and Nait! It was really great of you to create those graphics. Thanks! I've never seen the Track List at the bottom of the screen, before. As cool as that is, that seems like a lot of real estate to give up (as far as I can see) I think setting up a couple keys to trigger the actions, may be the simplest solution for me. Peace, Keith
